State Impound & Vehicle Release

Need to get your vehicle out of impound? We're here to help you understand the process.

Having your vehicle impounded can be stressful, especially when you're unsure where it was taken or what you need to do to get it back.

We've put together these steps to help you locate your vehicle, obtain the required paperwork, and prepare for pickup at Jake's Towing and Recovery.

Please verify your vehicle's location before visiting. Jake's Towing and Recovery operates more than one storage location. Your impound record will identify the yard holding your vehicle.

How to Get Your Vehicle Released

1. Verify Your Vehicle's Location

Before visiting our tow yard, confirm that your vehicle is being stored at Jake's Towing and Recovery.

Utah's Impounded Vehicle Service allows you to search using your license plate number, VIN, or state impound form number. The results will show which towing company has your vehicle and where it is located.

2. Obtain an Impound Release, If Required

For a state impound, you will generally need to obtain an official Letter of Impound Release from the Utah DMV before your vehicle can be released.

The DMV may require proof of ownership, photo identification, and payment of applicable state impound fees, penalties, or registration charges.

Not every vehicle removal requires the same paperwork. Check your vehicle's impound record for the specific instructions.

3. Contact Us and Bring Your Documents

Once you have completed any required DMV steps, contact Jake's Towing and Recovery to confirm your vehicle's pickup location, release arrangements, and current balance.

Bring your DMV impound release, if required, along with a valid government-issued photo ID and any other documentation needed to verify your authority to retrieve the vehicle.

4. Pay the Towing and Impound Fees

All applicable towing, storage, and authorized fees must be paid before the vehicle is released.

These fees are separate from any fees paid directly to the DMV. Storage charges may continue to accumulate until the vehicle is released.

Vehicle Release Authorization

Who Can Pick Up an Impounded Vehicle?

For security and legal reasons, vehicles cannot be released to unauthorized individuals.

We strongly recommend that the registered owner pick up the vehicle whenever possible.

If someone other than the registered owner will be retrieving the vehicle, additional documentation and written authorization may be required. Please contact us before arriving to confirm the requirements.

Vehicles will only be released to individuals who meet the applicable ownership, identification, and authorization requirements.
